THEIR STORIES

Witness the stories of our neurodivergent creatives: Vico, Pia, Anjo, and Helena.
How they were able to start as budding artists and bloom into the artists that they are today.
As they say, a flower that blooms in adversity is the most beautiful flower of all.
Though the garden may not always be green for our creatives, they were able to overcome their difficulties.
With the right amount of support from organizations and the love of their parents,
they are able to reap the joys of their passion.

Vico

Well-deserved acclaimed painter, Victor Francesco Cham or also known by many as Vico, is a 34 year old painter, Digital artist and children's book illustrator. As an artist, his inspirations draw from his main subjects; people and beauty queens.

For Vico, a parent’s support is always important. With the potential they have seen in their son, they set up Vico’s Artism Gallery, open to any person in the neurodivergent spectrum to learn how to paint.

Pia

A creative with a spirit! There are no dull moments with Pia Cabanero, a 26-year old graphic designer working for Cocomilk studios, an independent graphic design studio based in Manila and Melbourne. When she was 19 years old, she involved herself with Autism Society Philippines. They would have a self-advocate circle consisting of young adults and adults on the autism spectrum where they would have opportunities to learn how to self-manage and organize.

Pia believes in the importance of affiliating with programs, and sees it as a good opportunity for creatives with autism such as herself. She personally recommends Autism Society Philippines because of initiatives to incentivize artists: such as an avenue to sell their paintings!

Anjo

An artist inspired by God and His Creations. Anjo Comaling, 22 years old is a painter, earning from his paintings and showcasing them in exhibits. As a child, Anjo was often surrounded by colors, sketchpads, and Bible stories. Through patience and passion, Anjo found his way. Today, he earns by selling his paintings through art exhibits and galleries. Anjo’s art journey grew when he joined Vico’s Artism Gallery, founded by Catherine Cham.

For Anjo, challenges come not from art itself, but from the world around it. He prefers calm spaces and quiet corners where he can focus. When painting, he finds peace—his way of expressing emotions he cannot always put into words.

Helena

A Fashion intern with a keen eye a love for stories. Helena Prudenciado is a 28-year old intern who has worked for South Imus Specialist Hospital and Bayo, a local Filipino-owned Fashion brand. As she was looking for a job, Best Buddies Philippines was the organization that helped Helena with that pursuit. Their organization has a pre-employment program where they would learn different skills — every Saturday.

Helena struggled, she thought it was hard because she was unsure of her choices. Wondering if she was in the right job. She doubted herself. But during all her doubts, her mother was there for her. When she was going to her pre-employment program in Best Buddies, her mom would review her work first before she submitted. Helena believes that parents should let their creative child find their own way: to have their own originality!
